IPEM (BE)

IPEMJoren Six

IPEM is the research center of the Musicology Section of the Department of Art, Music and Theater Studies at Ghent University. IPEM provides a scientific basis for the cultural and creative sector, in casu music and performance arts, and does pioneering research work on the relationship between music body movement and new technologies.
IPEM is directed by Prof. dr. Pieter-Jan Maes.
The center's focus is on embodied music cognition and expressive interaction with music, such as listening, performing, conducting, dancing, sporting, and physical rehabilitation. Interdisciplinary methods are developed based on music theory, performer-inspired analysis, advanced behavioural and neuroscience empirical experimentation, statistics, and computer modelling. At IPEM music-based feedback systems are created, for applications in domains such as music education, rehabilitation, sports activities, and arts. Cutting-edge artistic research (by artists) linked with its scientific leadership is highly supported.

Collaborator: dr. Bart Moens

Bart Moens is postdoctoral researcher at IPEM, a music research center focused on embodied music cognition, of Ghent University. He holds a PhD in Art Science and Computer Science Engineering. His research interests include human-computer interaction, synchronisation and artistic performance interaction with technology.

Ghent Centre for Digital Humanities (BE)

Ghent Centre for Digital Humanities (https://www.ghentcdh.ugent.be) collaborates on numerous humanities research projects, providing essential technical expertise. Through close partnerships, GhentCDH tailors digital tools to better meet researchers’ needs. This collaborative approach allows for the reuse of expertise and infrastructure across projects, reducing development costs."

Collaborator: dr. Joren Six

Joren Six is a postdoctoral research fellow at IPEM, a Ghent University research institute for systematic musicology. He holds a MA in Computer Science and a PhD in Musicology. His research is situated in the fields of Music Informatics, Music Information Retrieval and Computational Ethnomusicology.

His PhD explored the interplay of music research and computational methods: Engineering systematic musicology: methods and services for computational and empirical music research After his PhD defense, early 2018, Joren remained at IPEM as post-doc involved in several projects: an European project (Horizon 2020) involving music instrument teaching and robotics: CONBOTS, a valorization project together with the sports science department of UGent (Nano4 sports). Now most of his time is spent on a three year Digital Humanities project: PaPiOM: Patterns in Pitch organization in music, a BOF – UGhent funded mandate.

IPEM (Moens) and Ghent Centre for Digital Humanities (Six) are the ideal partners to setup a workshop on body motion and music making, given its vast experience in developing research-based digital applications involving movement and music.
